See an acne doctor online — how it works and what it costs

Seeing a doctor about acne no longer means taking time off for a clinic visit. With The Skin Crowd you speak to a registered doctor online, by video, after a short assessment that gives her your skin history before you meet.

Here is exactly what happens, who you will speak to and what it costs.

Initial consultation R 250 — once-off, non-refundable. Consult fee only.

Who the doctor is

Consultations are with Dr Christine van Looy, a registered medical practitioner (HPCSA MP0879240). She is a GP, not a dermatologist, and refers you to a specialist or for an in-person examination when your skin needs one.

She reviews every assessment herself. Nothing is decided by an algorithm: the assessment simply gives her a structured history to work from, and she speaks to you before any plan is agreed.

What happens in the video consult

Your doctor goes through your assessment answers and photos with you. She asks about your skin routine, what has and hasn't helped, how your skin reacts to products and anything in your medical history that matters. Then she discusses a skin-care plan suited to your skin and what to expect over the following weeks.

Online doctor or dermatologist?

Many people with acne start with a doctor rather than a specialist. An online consult is a convenient first step for ongoing breakouts. Severe, scarring or painful acne may need a dermatologist, and your doctor will refer you when it does. Our guide on whether you need a dermatologist for acne covers this in more detail.

What it costs

The initial consultation is R250, once-off and non-refundable. It covers the consultation only, and there is no obligation to sign up for anything afterwards.
